Personal Training

Pilates gently strengthens your core and realigns your shoulders, hips, and pelvis for a longer, leaner body. Men love it because it increases rotation and functional movement (note golfers!), and supports back muscles. Women like the tall, trim, poised feeling of securely-wrapped muscles in their core, pelvic floor, and mid-back. No more computer hunch!

Pilates Private Instruction: The Most effective way to focus on your unique needs, injuries, or chronic concerns. Private lessons are necessary for an initial evaluation and base to learn the fundamentals of the Pilates method as well as a continual enhancement to your wellness routine.

Yoga

Yoga is an ancient, spiritual practice that uses the body, breath, and mind to energize and balance the whole being. Yoga promotes body strength and stamina, greater flexibility, and rehabilitating and healing to injuries. Along with these physical benefits, yoga is also a mental science teaching students to rein in the constantly wandering mind, developing greater awareness in all aspects of life; helps release stress and tension with mental and emotional release.

Yoga includes three major aspects: breathing (pranayama), postures (asanas), and concentration/meditation (dharana/dhyana). The following list describes the types of yoga:

Astanga (Power) Yoga: Astanga yoga is a specific type of vinyasa (flow) yoga in which a set series of postures are linked together and synchronized with the breath and bandhas to increase concentration and build heat and energy in the body. This class helps release stress and tension, and develops strength, focus, balance, and flexibility.

Hatha Yoga: This is a branch of yoga which focuses on physical and mental well-being. With hundreds of variations, hatha yoga helps to make the spine supple and promotes circulation in all the organs, glands, and tissues. These postures stretch and align the body, promoting flexibility, strength, and balance.

Vinyasa/Astanga Yoga: These classes focus on connecting breath with movement to create stillness in the mind and energy in the body, leaving you feeling peaceful and relaxed. Some classes will be more traditional astanga yoga primary or second series and many will be unique sequences of postures. Classes are sweaty and fun. Intermediate level class is only open to students with at least 6 months regular vinyasa class experience.

Vinyasa Yoga: Vinyasa/Flow Yoga is a style of yoga that has evolved from the traditional hatha yoga practice. Hatha yoga integrates the principles of awareness and alignment while cultivating strength and flexibility. What Vinyasa yoga provides is a pathway to these principles by connecting breath and bandha with dynamic, fluid movement. Knowledge of Surya Namaskara A and B and Inversions required. This class is not suitable for beginners.

Dr. Russell uses a combination of structural and functional analyses to uncover the condition’s underlying cause. He then uses treatments including physical therapy, joint and myofascial mobilization, acupuncture, and Pilates-based clinical rehabilitation to resolve the acute conditions and correct underlying imbalances, thus enabling you to return to your normal activity level. Pilates-b sed clinical rehabilitation is the use of Pilates exercise principles and equipment as well as other treatment modalities for (1) rehabilitation of past injuries, (2) pre- or post-surgery conditioning, or (3) pre-Pilates conditioning, should you need to address coordination or strength imbalances prior to starting Pilates training.

Acupuncture is used to treat arthritis as well as chronic and acute musculoskeletal problems. When combined with Chinese Medicinals, it is useful in the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems. Herbal medicine and acupuncture have been shown to improve symptoms related to pre-menopausal and post menopausal syndromes, fibromyalgia, allergies, anxiety, headache, disease, asthma, and much more.

Weight Loss
Lose Weight with Pilates and PractiCal™

Cindy Berner, MS, RD, LD
Cindy is a registered dietitian with more than 26 years experience in the field of nutrition. Her focus is on helping clients develop a practical approach to daily eating that allows them to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight and lifestyle. Cindy’s goal is to help individuals make significant changes in both what, how and why they eat through a three pronged approach of nutrition education, behavior modification and physical activity. Cindy finished her undergraduate degree in Dietetics at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and went on to complete her Masters Degree in Medical Nutrition at St. Louis University.

The Pilates & Yoga Center of St. Louis is proud to partner with the PractiCal Lifestyle Plan, the common sense diet
that delivers uncommon results. PractiCal is a simple structured eating plan built around three areas:

A diet of fresh, nutrient rich foods, which you choose.

Learning to control the external eating cues that have sabotaged you in the past.

Adding physical activity into your day with Pilates classes, moderate walking and any other activities you enjoy.

Eat the Foods You Love
Unlike other weight loss plans, there are no pre-packaged meals to purchase or "one size fits all" fad diets to follow. PractiCal's common sense approach uses only fresh, whole foods you buy at your local food store. After all, this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. Using real food allows you to make a seamless transition from weight loss to long-term maintenance.

Work with Experts in Nutrition
PractiCal coaches are Registered Dietitians who will develop an eating plan built around your personal food preferences and personal health goals. Then, they will work with you to create a plan that minimizes the constant decision making about what and when to eat. Don't worry. You won't go hungry. In fact, you'll be amazed at how much and how frequently you'll be eating. And, since your plan is built around the foods you like, you won't feel as deprived. Plus, once a week you'll be able to relax and enjoy almost any food you want! More importantly, your PractiCal coach will help you explore why you may have not been successful in the past and offer techniques to help you succeed going forward.

Perfect for Any Lifestyle
Whether you're a stay at home mom, busy executive, at home or on the road, your PractiCal coach will give you the knowledge and support you need to create and maintain a healthy new lifestyle. You can even consult with your coach right here after your workouts.

You'll learn to make better choices. You'll feel better, sleep better and have more energy than ever before, too. Better yet, you'll be able pass along your knowledge to other family members. In fact, we even work with couples and families who want to do the program together.
